At Better Pet, we understand that navigating the world of veterinary physiotherapy may raise questions, and we're here to provide clarity. Whether you're curious about the techniques we employ, the conditions we treat, or information about booking and payment, our FAQ section aims to provide answers to support you in making informed decisions for your pet's well-being.
Is physiotherapy suitable for my pet?
Veterinary physiotherapy can be used to treat a variety of conditions in a variety of species’! Don’t worry if your pet is nervous or intolerant towards veterinary professionals, I can work with you to find the best solution for your pet. If you would like to have a quick discussion regarding your pets condition before booking your initial consultation, please contact me *here*!
Which conditions can physiotherapy treat?
Veterinary physiotherapy is typically used to treat orthopaedic and neurological conditions. However, it can also be used to maintain your pets musculoskeletal health as they age, which is especially useful in sporting or working animals whose bodies undergo plenty of wear and tear!
When should my pet begin physiotherapy?
Contrary to popular belief, your pet does not need to be in pain, injured or recovering from a surgery before physiotherapy can be beneficial to them! Physiotherapy can be suitable for dogs of all ages, and regular musculoskeletal maintenance is advised throughout your pet’s life. If your pet is recovering from an injury or a surgery, please speak with your vet and follow their advice in regards to when your pet should begin a physiotherapy programme.
What happens during a physiotherapy session?
The initial consultation requires a little more time in order for me to get to know you and your pet, and I will spend some time asking you questions about your pets routine, lifestyle and home environment before conducting a physical assessment. All consultations will include a postural and dynamic assessment (normally performed when the animal is pottering around their home environment), a thorough musculoskeletal assessment (with orthopaedic and neurological testing if this is indicated) followed by appropriate physiotherapy treatment. During the initial consultation I will discuss with you what you wish to get out of your pets appointments and a treatment plan will be completed. This treatment plan may be altered at subsequent follow up consultations.
Do you offer laser therapy?
Yes! Laser therapy can be an amazing adjuvant therapy for a multitude of conditions. Your vet may recommend laser therapy after certain treatments or surgeries. Laser therapy is often implemented (free of charge) during regular physiotherapy sessions, although stand alone targeted laser therapy can be priced on application. Can you provide a personalised home exercise plan?
Following each consultation remedial exercises will be discussed with you and demonstrated to ensure they are suitable for your animal and you are comfortable with completing them. These will be tailored to your animal and may be adjusted in subsequent consultations.
Can you treat my cat or other small animals?
Of course! Physiotherapy can be useful for all animals. The welfare of your animal will always be prioritised, and your pet’s tolerance level may mean that our physiotherapy sessions have to be adjusted to suit them.
Can you treat my horse?
Absolutely! Equine consultations can often take a little more time. Please ensure that your horse is in from the field and clean and dry prior to your appointment so that I can focus all of my time on the assessment and treatment.
As a pet owner, I understand how important our four-legged companions are to our families. I also understand that recognizing signs they are struggling and implementing changes.
Do I require consent from my vet?
As per the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1996, it is a legal requirement for a veterinary physiotherapist to obtain veterinary consent prior to treatment. Your veterinary surgeon can refer online, by email, or by completing a consent form which can be found *here*. Better Pet Veterinary Physiotherapy reserves the right to decline treatment if sufficient veterinary consent cannot be provided.
Are the reports shared with my vet?
In order to withhold appropriate communication with your veterinary surgeon, and to keep them in the loop with your pet’s progress, reports are emailed to them on a regular basis. Furthermore, if cases require a more in-depth discussion between paraprofessionals, communication by telephone may take place between us and your veterinarian.
What happens if you notice an abnormality or a new lameness during an appointment?
Better Pet Veterinary Physiotherapy reserves the right to refuse to treat your animal and refer you back to your referring veterinarian, should I believe your animal is exhibiting a change in their clinical condition which requires veterinary attention.
